HCTM Middle School Mini-Conference: Preparing Our Students for Algebra

Join HCTM in investigating "Algebra Preparedness".

With increasing expectations for Algebra 1 as the minimal entery-level mathematics course for high school, a critical need exists to ensure that the middle-grades mathematics curriculum adequately prepares students in six key areas: operations with signed numbers, proportional reasoning, variables and expressions, patterns, the coordinate plane, and inequalities. Each breakout session will focus on one of these six critical areas, providing teachers with ideas and resources for supporting all students to strengthen their mathematical understanding.

Explore these topics

  • Operations with Signed Numbers

"A General COntext for Working with the Integers" with Joel Weiner  University of Hawaii - Department of Mathematics

  • Variables, Expressions and Equations

"Symbolic Expressions and the Representation Process" with Hannah Slovin University of Hawaii - Curriculum Research and Development Group

  • Ratio and Proportion

"Investigating the Concept of Proportion:  A Rational Look at Ratio" with Mike Gilbert  University of Hawaii - Curriculum Research and Development Group

  • Patterns

"From Patterns to Generalizations:  Activities from the Nanaikapono Algebra Camp"  with Joe Ziliox  University of Hawaii - College of Education and Shari Ishii Nanikapono Elementary School

  • The Coordinate Plane

"Navigating the Coordinate Plane with Navigator"  with Charlie Souza Stevenson Middle School and  Melfried Olson University of Hawaii - Cuuriculum Research and Development Group

  • Inequalities

"Inequalities, Intuitive But NOT Trivial:  An Application of Logical Thinking"  with Linda Veneciano University of Hawaii - Curriculum Research and Development Group,  Fay Zenigami University of Hawaii - Curriculum Research and Development Group, and Claire Okazaki University of Hawaii - Curriculum Research and Development Group,

BONUS session: "Teaching Tough Topics Action/Consequence Documents on TI-Nspire" with Debbie Kula Sacred Hearts Academy

Debbie Kula will be presenting an extended session: "Teaching Tough Topics: Action/Consequence Documents with the TI-Nspire"

We'll hold three 70-minute sessions throughout the morning.  No need to sign up for specific sessions in advanced but seats are limited so come early and get the most out of this morning!

As usual, refreshments and door prizes will be provided.
